Abstract

Insect pest problems of Albizia lebbek (L.) Benth. in nurseries and young plantations.

Abstract

Nurseries and young plantations of Albizia lebbek in India are subjected to serious insect problems, the most prominent being stunting and dwarfing of seedlings and saplings caused by sap sucking insect pests. The pests involved are Psylla hyalina, Acizzia indica, Aphis sp. nr. craccivora, Rastrococcus iceryoides, Ferrisia virgata and Thrips flavus. All except Rastrococcus iceryoides are new pest records on A. lebbek. Control measures tried indicated that spraying with insecticides, viz. endosulfan, dimethoate, malathion and fenvalerate (given in descending order of effectiveness) kept the pest under check. Biological and silvicultural control strategies are also discussed.
