Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Phylogeny and classification of the Melastomataceae and Memecylaceae.

Abstract

A systematic analysis is made of the Melastomataceae, a pantropical family of about 4200-4500 species in about 166 genera, and of the closely related family Memecylaceae, with about 430 species in 6 genera. Some taxonomists consider the latter to be a sub-family of the former. Species from the Melastomataceae exhibit a diversity of growth habits, including herbs, shrubs, treelets and trees to 30-45 m (e.g. Alloneuron, Loreya, Miconia and Tessmannianthus).
