Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Further data on the spread of Aedes albopictus in Genoa.

Abstract

Further data are presented on the presence of A. albopictus in Genoa, Italy, where this oriental species was first reported in September 1990 [see Parassitologia, 32: 301-304 (1990)]. Adult mosquitoes biting man were collected using aspirators in the area from which A. albopictus was originally reported and in surrounding houses and areas where potential larval habitats of the species were identified; scattered foci of A. albopictus were found throughout Genoa during the summer of 1991 (the distribution of sites is mapped). The winter of 1990-91 had been long and hard, with temperatures frequently dipping below freezing; it is suggested that A. albopictus may become established in Italy, and even become a vector of arboviruses and filariae.
