Seed germination of Plantago major ssp. major and Plantago lanceolata.
The effects of various pre-treatments and germination conditions on P. major and P. lanceolata seeds, studied separately and in combination with light of various spectral energy distributions, is discussed. Nitrate stimulated germination of P. major only under suboptimal conditions of light and temp. A decrease is osmotic potential decreased germination particularly at low red/far red light ratio. Soil disturbance exposed buried seeds to light, which induced germination. Nitrate stimulated germination of P. lanceolata in light and darkness. In general, seeds of P. lanceolata and P. major showed a similar response to temp., stratification and light.
