Abstract

Distribution and integrated management of weeds in Bay Islands.

Abstract

Field surveys were conducted in the Bay (Andaman and Nicobar) Islands to identify the major weeds and their density and distribution in paddy [rice], sugarcane, plantation and vegetable crops, and grazed and protected pasture. Of the 251 weed species from 58 families, 14 have been identified previously as being some of the worlds worst weeds, viz. Cyperus rotundus, Cynodon dactylon, Echinochloa crus-galli, E. colonum, Eleusine indica, Imperata cylindrica, Eichhornia crassipes, Portulaca oleracea, Digitaria sanguinalis, Convolvulus arvensis, Amaranthus hybridus, A. spinosus, Paspalum conjugatum and Rottboellia exaltata [R. cochinchinensis]. The crop-wise distribution of weeds on the Islands is given, weeds which are likely to cause serious concern in the future are mentioned, and an integrated approach appropriate for the management of these weeds, the constraints encountered and future lines of research in this area are presented.
