Reaction of sugarcane clones to Striga hermonthica infection in Kenya.
In field trials on sandy clay loam at Kibos, 18 sugarcane clones were evaluated for their reaction to Striga hermonthica. The effect of S. hermonthica on the cane was first noted 4 months after planting. Severely affected clones characteristically exhibited leaf burn, wilting, stunted growth and small pointed leaves which contributed to poor canopy formation and tiller mortality. Clones KEN 83-1228, KEN 83-1161, KEN 83-538 and Co 617 had significantly higher levels of productivity with S. hermonthica infestation than the other clones, and thus were rated as resistant.
