Abstract

Fungi occurring on Orobanche spp. and their preliminary evaluation for Orobanche control.

Abstract

The isolation of fungi from O. crenata and O. minor plants collected from Syria, Morocco and France yielded 16 different species belonging to 9 genera, the most common of which were Alternaria, Fusarium and Ulocladium. Eleven species out of the 16 had not been known previously to have occurred on Orobanche spp. In preliminary laboratory experiments, and in field trials in faba beans near Lattakia, Syria, Ulocladium atrum infected and destroyed underground tubercles and emerged shoots of O. crenata, provided that the temp. was around 20°C and the RH between 50 and 80%. It was concluded that the use of U. atrum as a potential biological control of Orobanche spp. appears promising and should, therefore, be further studied.
