Aquaculture in the Republic of Korea.
Although aquaculture has been practised in the Korea Republic for hundreds of years, modern practices did not emerge until the 1960s. Now over 3 Mt of seafoods are produced and consumed each year in Korea. Aquaculture contributes around 26% of fisheries production. Fish feeds were first manufactured in 1981, and by 1989 there were 16 registered feed manufacturers. Several organizations undertake both aquaculture and marine and inland fisheries related research and development activities, both at national and local levels. Planned research includes reducing water pollution in damed lakes and irrigation reservoirs.
