Breeding maize for Striga resistance.
Screening difficulties encountered in a breeding programme to develop S. hermonthica resistant forms of maize are reported. Screening success was improved by reducing N fertilizer rates, increasing the Striga seed rate and using ridge planting. A table listing hybrids and open-pollinated maize genotypes resistant to S. hermonthica as of December 1990 is presented.
