Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Lessons from main feeding experiments conducted at CATIE using fodder trees as part of the N-ration.

Abstract

Data from Central America, particularly Costa Rica and Guatemala on developing goat and sheep feeding systems using tree fodder as protein supplements in diets where the main energy source was bananas is given in a table. Productivity of dairy cows fed on diets supplemented with Erythrina poeppigiana and traditional nitrogen sources is discussed. It is concluded that although direct effects of foliage supplements may be small there are also indirect benefits such as increased carrying capacity and recycling of nutrients of grasslands.
