Abstract

Study of the cadmium content of cephalopod molluscs from the Ionian sea.

Abstract

Mean cadmium, estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, in edible parts of the cephalopods Octopus vulgaris, Sepia officinalis, Loligo vulgaris and Eledone cirrhosa caught in the Ionian Sea in spring 1988 was 48.5 µg/kg. Range was from 14 to 140 µg/kg. Based on a mean weekly consumption of molluscs of 0.025 kg/person in the region intake of Cd from cephalopods is about 1.2 µg, weekly, which is well below FAO/WHO recommended limits.
