Technique of mass production of the predatory coccinellid, Chilocorus nigritus (Fabricius) on coconut scale, Aspidiotus destructor Sign.
A method for the mass production of Chilocorus nigritus [C. nigrita], a predator of the coconut pest Aspidiotus destructor, is described. Parts of coconut leaf infested with colonies of A. destructor were collected from the field in Tamil Nadu and the pest was mass-reared on pumpkin fruits. Adults and larvae of C. nigrita were collected from the field and introduced into cages containing the pest and coconut leaves. Once the female predators had laid eggs, the infested coconut leaves bearing eggs of the predator were cut up and pieces were transferred to glass tubes. The larvae of the predator were provided with A. destructor as food and were released into the field as newly-emerged adults.
