Abstract

Helminth parasites of wild boar, Sus scrofa, in Iran.

Abstract

Fifty-seven S. scrofa from protected regions of Iran were examined for helminths. 16 species were collected including: 10 nematodes (Gongylonema pulchrum, Ascarops strongylina, Ascaris suum, Physocephalus sexalatus, Globocephalus urosubulatus, Oesophagostomum dentatum, Trichuris suis, Metastrongylus apri, M. pudendotectus and M. salmi); one acanthocephalan (Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus); 2 trematodes (Fasciola gigantica and Dicrocoelium dendriticum [Dicrocoelium lanceolatum]); 3 larval cestodes (Taenia solium, T. hydatigena and Echinococcus granulosus larvae). New host and distribution records were established for all helminths except T. solium cysticerci. Wild boar shared 9 of these helminths with domestic pigs, 6 with ruminants, and 3 with humans in Iran. M. pudendotectus and M. salmi are reported for the first time from Iran.
