Initial growth and survival of different forest tree species in Assam.
Growth data (height, girth and stem dry matter) to 4 yr old are reported from 7 species established in trials (for agroforestry use) at the Livestock Research Station of Assam Agricultural University during the rainy season of 1986. The best growth was obtained with Azadirachta indica (average height 6.21 m and girth 47 cm) and the least by Trewia nudiflora and Albizia lucida. Anthocephalus cadamba [A. chinensis] grew slowly until the second year and then better than all other species except for Azadirachta indica. The other 3 species, which showed intermediate growth rates, were Bombax ceiba [B. malabaricum], Albizia procera and Lagerstroemia speciosa.
