Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Nursery production of valuable broadleaved trees.

Abstract

An account of the establishment in Tuscany of a nursery for the production of tree seedlings - oak (Quercus robur), walnut (Juglans regia), cherry (Prunus avium), chestnut (Castanea sativa) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior) - for farm forestry in Italy. Seed collection (from local forests) and storage, type of beds, growing media, container size, vegetative propagation techniques used and shading are some topics noted. Data are tabulated for height growth after one year of tree seedlings at various spacings. Demand by farmers for seedlings of these valuable timber or multipurpose species has risen recently, particularly because of EC subsidies including set-aside grants.
