Abstract

The africanus group of the subgenus Stegomyia, genus Aedes, is characterized and diagnosed. Keys to the identification of species are provided. Information on the present status of the africanus group of species is summarized. A. maxgermaini sp. nov. from Cameroon (found biting man in Raphia palm forest galleries) is described. A. pseudoafricanus is reported from the Ivory Coast (CĂ´te d'Ivoire) and Sierra Leone for the first time. Lectotypes are designated for A. africanus and A. luteocephalus. Apart from species already mentioned, A. corneti, A. neoafricanus, A. opok and A. ruwenzori are redescribed, with notes on distribution and bionomics.
