Abstract

Ixodid fauna of wild ruminants in Piedmont.

Abstract

Some 365 red deer (Cervus elaphus), 59 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 77 alpine ibex (Capra ibex), 534 chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) and 10 mouflon (Ovis musimon [O. orientalis]) from the Piemonte region of Italy were examined for ixodid ticks during 1982-89. Adults of Ixodes ricinus (on red deer, ibex and chamois), Haemaphysalis concinna (on red deer), H. inermis (on ibex), H. punctata (on ibex and chamois), Dermacentor marginatus (on red deer, ibex, chamois and mouflon) and nymphs of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (on mouflon) were collected. H. inermis on ibex, H. punctata on ibex and chamois, and R. sanguineus on mouflon are thought to be new host records. H. concinna and H. inermis are new geographic records for Piemonte.
