Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Electrophoretic identification of herbivorous carps (bighead, grass and silver carp) and their hybrids.

Abstract

Muscle samples from 84 bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), 30 grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), 164 silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and 70 hybrids among these species were typed for the smallcapËśL-lactate dehydrogenase loci LDH-A and LDH-B, and for the creatine kinase locus, CK, by starch gel electrophoresis. Allele frequencies are tabulated. The following alleles were fixed in the 3 species: bighead carp, LDH-Ac, LDH-Bband CKa; grass carp, LDH-Ad, LDH-Baand CKa; silver carp, LDH-Ac, LDH-Bband CKb. The parent species of all hybrids could be determined, since each locus showed codominant expression of its alleles. It was not possible to distinguish reciprocal hybrids by isozyme typing.
