Abstract

Recent work on the control of Echinochloa pyrimidalis (Lam.) Hitch. and Chase and Echinochloa polystachya (Kunth) Hitchc.

Abstract

Nine commercial herbicides containing asulam, dalapon, paraquat, diuron, ametryn, atrazine or hexazinone, alone or in combination, were evaluated for their control of E. pyramidalis and E. polystachya in canals at the Blairmont Sugar Estate, Guyana, where they hindered irrigation and transport. The best control at 3 weeks after application was afforded by 15 kg/ha Target (asulam + dalapon). Deliberately sowing Leersia hexandra, a grass which only needed to be removed once a year, to compete with E. pyramidalis and E. polystachya also proved promising in suppressing the growth of the latter 2 weeds.
