Abstract

Weed impact on U.S. rice.

Abstract

Responses of individual weed species (red rice, Echinochloa crus-galli, Leptochloa panicoides, L. fascicularis, Sesbania exaltata, Brachiaria platyphylla, Eclipta prostrata, Commelina diffusa, Aeschynomene virginica and Heteranthera limosa) at various interference durations and densities were used to develop a rice yield response model. This model concurrently defined effects of weed interference durations and densities of major rice field weeds on grain yield reductions of both conventional-stature and semidwarf rice cultivars. These yield reduction models were incorporated into the economic component of the RiceWeed expert system to aid decisions for selecting alternative herbicide programmes judiciously, while maximizing economic returns.
