Fire blight in Switzerland - a threat to the fruit industry?
Erwinia amylovora was found on ornamental Cotoneaster in northeastern Switzerland in 1989 and all infected bushes were burned. None of the nearby apple or pear trees appeared to be affected. Details are given of the host range and distribution of fireblight in Europe and of rigid import controls, quarantine measures and obligatory reporting in force in Switzerland. A computer-based warning system is in operation at Wädenswil, using daily records from 17 automatic weather stations over the whole country. Monitoring the fireblight situation will be intensified, particularly in the northeastern part of the country.
