Abstract

Survey of bacterial wilt on fresh market hybrid tomatoes in Taiwan.

Abstract

The incidence of wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum) on improved hybrids averaged 15% in 11 fields for Hualien ASVEG no. 5 and 26% in 17 fields for Taichung ASVEG no. 4, whereas for other hybrids it averaged 55% in 16 fields. Within the same field, the population density of P. solanacearum was 34 times higher in the soil associated with roots of wilted plants than from nonwilted plants. Based on the av. price/kg of fresh market tomatoes (Jun.-Oct.), estimated losses from the surveyed fields were NT$ 496 000/ha.
