Abstract

Biology of potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella Zeller with special reference to pupal eye pigmentation and adult sexual dimorphism.

Abstract

The life history of the gelechiid Phthorimaea operculella was studied using a laboratory maintained colony. Five stages of pupal development could be identified on the basis of eye pigmentation. The sexually dimorphic characters of the adults are described. Male and female adults differed morphologically, and also in their longevity (14 ± 1.28 days and 9.1 ± 2.71 days, resp.). The life cycle of the gelechiid was completed in 21 days.
