Abstract

Eco-epidemiology of leishmanioses in Syria. 2. Occurrence of Leishmania infantum Nicolle and Leishmania tropica (Wright) (Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae) in dogs.

Abstract

Sixty three dogs from 5 regions of Syria endemic for human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) or cutaneous leishmaniases (CL) were investigated. 4 of 40 dogs from foci of human VL were seropositive and L. infantum MON-1 was found in gland smears of 2 of the dogs. 3 of 13 dogs from the Kemhana focus of CL had leishmanial lesions and L. tropica MON-76 was found in one of the dogs. The ecological characteristics of the 5 zones investigated are described. The distribution of leishmaniases in Syria, their probable vectors and appropriate control measures are discussed.
