Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Irish mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae): a checklist of the the species and their known distribution.

Abstract

A total of 18 species of mosquito, including the Anopheles maculipennis complex (probably A. atroparvus and A. messeae, although neither has yet been confirmed), is recorded from Ireland, of which 5 - A. algeriensis, Aedes caspius, A. punctor, A. dorsalis and A. rusticus - are new for the island. In addition, 2 doubtful species, A. cinereus and A. cantans, are confirmed as occurring in Ireland. A lectotype for A. detritus is designated. Brief notes (with records for counties in the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland) and distribution maps (based on the UTM 50 km grid) are given for each species; another map indicates coverage for all records.
