Abstract

Amazon fish parasites.

Abstract

This monograph represents an attempt to compile all available information on the parasites of fishes found in the Amazon River. Parasites of freshwater fishes from other parts of the Neotropical Region are included for comparison. There are 10 main chapters, viz.: Protozoa and Ciliophora; Monogenoidea; Trematoda (Digenea); Cestodaria and Cestoda; Nematoda; Acanthocephala; Copepoda; Branchiura; Isopoda; Hirudinea, Pentastomida & other pathogens. Each of these chapters is arranged in the same way, containing sections on morphology, life cycle and transmission, pathology, prevention and treatment, collection and study methods, identification and keys, and a checklist of species. Line drawings and some micrographs are given. The extensive bibliography is at the end of the book, arranged under the same (taxonomic) headings as the main chapters. A host-parasite list ends the monograph.
