Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Invasions of adventive plants in Israel.

Abstract

Of 123 adventive species occurring in the flora of Israel, 42% are of tropical origin and 22.7% are North American. The geographical distribution suggested that approx. two thirds of the species reached Israel through neighbouring countries while one third arrived directly from their countries of origin. Patterns of population dynamics are categorized as follows: accidental species, species with limited distribution, colonizing species and species penetrating into natural habitats. About 30 species were widespread noxious weeds of economic significance; 20 other species are known to have similar ecological tendencies in other countries.
