Abstract

Fire blight incidence in pear orchards and its control in Egypt.

Abstract

Losses in pear orchards in northern Egypt have been serious since 1982, with 75-90% of developed blossoms being affected by Erwinia amylovora. In control experiments over 5 years, copper compounds were ineffective but good protection was given by the bactericide Sumitomo S-0208, sprayed 5 times at weekly intervals starting before blooming, when 76.9-96.4% of blossoms were free from infection and fruits developed normally. This paper was presented at the Fifth International Workshop on Fireblight, held in Diepenbeek, Belgium on 19-22 Jun., 1989.
