Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

The genus Pennisetum in peninsular Malaysia with particular reference to P. setosum, a new record for the weed flora.

Abstract

The morphology, ecology and distribution of the 5 species of Pennisetum currently found on the Malay peninsula are briefly described. The fodder species (P. purpureum, P. glaucum [P. americanum] and P. clandestinum) were introduced between 1917 and 1924, but P. polystachion and P. setosum are thought to have arrived from Thailand in the early and late 1980s, resp. P. polystachion is now widely distributed, infesting at least 10 km2 of roadsides in 1988, but P. setosum is still confined to small patches in a few localities, mainly in the NW of the country.
