Abstract

Histophilus ovis/Haemophilus somnus infection as the cause of chronic orchitis/ periorchitis in a bull and excretion with semen.

Abstract

Histophilus ovis/Haemophilus somnus was isolated from the semen, prepuce, epididymis and testes of a Brown Swiss bull with chronic orchitis and periorchitis. H. somnus was identified by bacterial cultures, biochemical and enzymatic reactions (Api ZYM System) as well as by DNA hybridization and histological methods. The strain isolated (HIM 1059-2) exhibited a DNA binding level of 72% with H. somnus (HIM 911-3) and of 28% with Actinobacillus seminis (ATCC 15768). The G+C content was 38.9%.
