Abstract

Distribution of the rose seed chalcid Megastigmus aculeatus var. nigroflavus Hoffmeyer (Hymenoptera: Torymidae) in North Carolina.

Abstract

A survey was carried out in North Carolina in 1986 to determine the distribution of Megastigmus aculeatus var. nigroflavus, which feeds internally on the seeds of Rosa multiflora, which has become a noxious weed in that state. The torymid was widespread, occurring at 54 of 57 sites (94.7%), in all 27 countries of the survey. The percentage infested hips averaged 42±28, and the percentage viable seed infested averaged 62±32. More seeds were infested at low than at high elevations.
