Abstract

Genetic variability and conservation problems in Alpine ibex and feral goat populations (genus Capra)

Abstract

Electrophoretic typing at 10 protein and enzyme loci was carried out on 20 ibex in Italy and Switzerland, 20 feral goats on Montecristo Island, 20 domestic (Alpine) goats and 1 ibex × domestic goat hybrid. Data are tabulated for allele frequencies at the loci, of which 7 were polymorphic in one or more populations. The greatest genetic variability was found in the Montecristo goats followed by Swiss ibex, Italian ibex and domestic goats; the heterozygosity observed in the 4 populations was 0.024, 0.021, 0.009 and 0.023 resp. The implications of the findings for conservation are discussed.
