Abstract

Biological control as an introduction phenomenon: a preliminary examination of programmes against Homoptera.

Abstract

A databank of classical biological control introductions against pest Homoptera is used to illustrate and comment on current ideas on the ecology of invading organisms highlighted by the SCOPE programme. It is concluded that these deliberate introductions are of limited value in predicting the outcome of chance invasions. Ecological theory, although not able to predict the result of specific biological control introductions, is helpful in providing guidelines for those planning biological control programmes.
