Identification and control of contaminant micro-organisms of true potato seed.
True potato seed was obtained from 4 ecological zones of Peru. Two actinomycetes, 1 Bacillus sp., Aspergillus niger, Botryodiplodia sp., Botrytis cinerea, Bipolaris sp., Cladosporium sp., Curvularia lunata [Cochliobolus lunatus], Fusarium oxysporum, F. sp., Monilia sp., Penicillium sp. and Ulocladium sp. were isolated. Inoculation of healthy seeds with these pathogens prevented germination in vitro. Of 4 seed treatments tested, 1% sodium hypochlorite was the most effective and germination was highest when the treatment was combined with gibberellic acid, applied 24 h earlier or later, to break dormancy.
