The scale insects of the tropical South Pacific region. Part 3: the soft scales (Coccidae) and other families.
This third book in a series on scale insects of the tropical South Pacific area is a taxonomic account of the important soft scales (Coccoidea) and species representing 10 other families of the area, information being recorded from specimens examined from all the major world collections of Pacific scale insects and from the economic literature. The families dealt with are Margarodidae, Ortheziidae, Eriococcidae, Dactylopiidae, Coccidae, Cerococcidae, Lecanodiaspididae, Kerriidae, Asterolecaniidae, Conchaspididae and Halimococcidae. Keys are provided to all 13 families and to 42 genera and 81 species, with detailed descriptions and illustrations. Like the first 2 parts, this work is designed to provide agricultural staff with a reliable means of identification of species and to encourage non-specialists to identify the groups. The species include some major pests. Four new genera and 15 new species are described. Four new combinations and 4 new synonyms are proposed, and 2 species are transferred to other genera.
