Abstract

Identity of the African coffee root mealybug, with descriptions of two new species of Planococcus (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae).

Abstract

Two new species of mealybug found on coffee roots are described from Africa. Planococcus fungicola sp. nov. from Kenya is the species that has been known in Africa as the coffee root mealybug. This mealybug is almost always associated with the fungus Diacanthodes novoguineensis, which thickly coats the coffee roots. P. radicum sp. nov. is from Nigeria and Tanzania. Dactylopius coffeae is synonymized with P. lilacinus.
