The problem of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and its control in direct seeded rice in the Northwest Selangor Project.
Infestation of Echinochloa crus-galli in the Northwest Selangor Project, where rice is direct sown by broadcasting, is reported. The worst affected area is Sawah Sempadan, where 75% infestation occurred in 48 and 9% of the area in 1985 and 1988, resp. Dry-sown crops appear to be more prone to infestation than wet-sown crops. Level fields, good water management and appropriate use of herbicides are the primary factors for successful control of the weed. Problems relating to weed control and adaptation of control techniques are discussed.
