Abstract

Weed population changes from transplanted to direct seed rice in the Muda area.

Abstract

Changes in the weed flora of rice in the Muda area of Malaysia since the adoption of double cropping and more rapidly maturing cultivars in the 1970s are traced. Since the move from transplanting to direct sowing, grasses such as Echinochloa crus-galli and Leptochloa chinensis have largely replaced the previously dominant broadleaved weeds and sedges. Notes are included on recently introduced herbicides, prospects for integrated control techniques and the extension work carried out by MADA among rice growers.
