Abstract

The history of the vedalia beetle importation to California and its impact on the development of biological control.

Abstract

The coccinellid Rodolia cardinalis was introduced into Californian citrus orchards in the late 1880s for control of the margarodid Icerya purchasi. The history of the importation of R. cardinalis to California and its impact on the development of biological control are reviewed. The genetic variability of colonized individuals of R. cardinalis is discussed.
