Abstract

Some observations on the formation of compression wood.

Abstract

Examination of samples around knots produced by pruning in 57 Cryptomeria japonica trees (28 or 35 yr old) and 69 Chamaecyparis obtusa trees (28 or 65 yr old) showed that the wood around knots was similar to compression wood in its short tracheids and thick cell walls. It was not clear whether pruning affected the formation of compression wood, although there was a clear correspondence between snow cover and compression wood formation (except in mature trees).
