Small fishes in strange places: a review of introduced poeciliids.
Nineteen species of poeciliid have been reported as introduced beyond their known historical ranges. Among these, Gambusia affinis has been introduced to at least 19 countries for biological control of mosquitoes (to 4 of these with successful results), and Poecilia latipinna and/or P. reticulata to 8 nations (none with successful outcomes regarding mosquito control). Negative impacts of G. affinis and G. holbrooki on native fish populations are discussed in detail. A synopsis of introduced poeciliids is presented.
