Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Provisional atlas of the ticks (Ixodoidea) of the British Isles.

Abstract

This publication maps the known distributions of the 22 species of British and Irish ticks (Ixodidae: Ixodes (15 spp.), Dermacentor (1), Hyalomma (1), Haemaphysalis (1), Rhipicephalus (1); Argasidae: Argas (2), Ornithodoros (2)) on 10-km grid squares. A checklist of species is presented. Accompanying notes provide information for each species on distribution in general, basic natural history, disease relationships and hosts. Analyses of hosts recorded are believed to be the first of their kind attempted for the British Isles, and these provide a simple numerical statement of the range of hosts used by all stages of each tick species. A note is appended on Hyalomma aegyptium, an artificially imported species found on tortoises.
