Abstract

Some experiences with Finn sheep in the subtropics.

Abstract

Data on importations of Finnish Landrace (FL) sheep into the Mediterranean subtropics are tabulated, and their performance under subtropical conditions is reviewed. Crossbreeding trials conducted in various countries in the region are described. The progeny of FL sheep crossed with local breeds inherited the high fertility of the FL breed. However, purebreeding of FL gave a poorer performance in this climate than in temperate countries. The litter size of crossbred sheep was up to 56% greater, and lambing was more frequent, than in local breeds. The incidence of fat-tail in lambs, for which there is a local preference and a higher price, was reduced by crossing local breeds with FL rams.
