Registration of sorghum disease-resistant fertility restorer germplasm line, 87BL2598.
This inbred has the parentage SC326-6 × SC103-12E. It was selected in Texas for agronomic type, high resistance to leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum [Setosphaeria turcica]) and rust (Puccinia purpurea), and resistance to zonate leaf spot (Gloeocercospora sorghi) and grey leaf spot (Cercospora sorghi). Additional selection was carried out in Georgia for improved resistance to foliar diseases, particularly anthracnose (Colletotrichum graminicola), and for tropical adaptation and green leaf retention. Line 87BL2598 is very leafy and shows high green leaf retention at the reproductive stage. It restores fertility to hybrids with A1 cytoplasmic male sterility, and its hybrids in A1 cytoplasm are suitable for combine grain production and have high foliar disease resistance. It is recommended for developing photoperiod-insensitive hybrids for tropical and subtropical regions.
