Abstract

The potential for biocontrol of witchweeds.

Abstract

A table is given listing insects recorded feeding on witchweeds (Striga spp.). Surveys of Striga spp. in India and Africa revealed the presence of a number of natural insect enemies including defoliators, gall formers (Smicronyx albovariegatus, S. umbrinus, other Smicronyx spp. and Eurytoma sp.), borers of shoot, stem and root, miners and inflorescence and fruit feeders. Some information is given on pathogens attacking Striga spp. An attempt at biological control of Striga using Smicronyx albovariegatus and Eulocastra argentisparsa imported from India and released against S. hermonthica in Ethiopia is briefly discussed. Prospects for the biological control of Striga are considered.
