Abstract

Diseases of cultivated sunflower in Liaoning Province, People's Republic of China.

Abstract

In surveys, conducted in 1985 and 1987, downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii) and Septoria leaf spot (S. helianthi) were 2 major diseases of sunflowers occurring early in the growing season. Black spot (Alternaria helianthi), rust (Puccinia helianthi) and Sclerotinia head rot (S. sclerotiorum) occurred later in the season. Powdery mildew (Erysiphe cichoracearum), Verticillium wilt (V. dahliae), Rhizopus head rot (R. arrhizus) and Alternaria leaf and stem rot (A. zinniae) occurred sporadically. This is the first report of these diseases (except for A. black spot) on cultivated sunflowers in China.
