Abstract

Ant-mealybug interaction decreases reproductive fitness of Schomburgkia tibicinis (Orchidaceae) in Mexico.

Abstract

The effect of the interaction between the formicid Crematogaster brevispinosa and the pseudoccid Planococcus citri on the reproductive fitness of Schomburgkia tibicinis, an orchid with extra-floral nectaries, was studied in the field in Mexico in February-June 1985. Plants which had both formicids and pseudococcids had a significantly higher number of dead inflorescences (64.5%) than plants from which formicids and pseudococcids were excluded (40.3%). The latter also produced more fruits than plants with C. brevispinosa and P. citri.
