Invasive Species Compendium

Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Checklist of the weed flora of Western Polynesia. An annotated list of the weed species of Samoa, Tonga, Niue, and Wallis and Futuna, along with the earliest dates of collection and the local names.

Abstract

The checklist includes 291 species, of which approx. 6% are native and another 14% were introduced by the Polynesians and are therefore Old World species. The remaining 80% have been introduced in the last 2 centuries and the vast majority are New World species. The dominant families are Gramineae (66 species), Leguminosae (39), Compositae (27), Cyperaceae (22), Euphorbiaceae (15), Convolvulacea (12), Labiatea (11) and Malvaceae (10). Following the name of each weed in the list is its common name where appropriate, and any Latin synonymus (taken largely from other floras). A brief description is given of each weed with the first reported date of collection in each of the island groups.
