Detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide

Abstract

Scale insects of the tropical South Pacific region. Part 2. Mealybugs (Pseudococcidae).

Abstract

This book provides a taxonomic account of the important pseudococcoids of the tropical South Pacific region and is the second of 3 parts planned for the Coccoidea of the area. The region comprises Melanesia and Polynesia, ranging from Irian Jaya in the west to Easter Island in the east, with the inclusion of the Micronesian territory of Kiribati and the Australian teritories of Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. Keys to 37 genera and 92 species of pseudococcids, including 3 new genera and 28 new species, are provided, with detailed descriptions and illustrations. Comments are provided on their taxonomy, distribution, biology, natural enemies and food plants. Twenty-three lectotypes are designated. The major pest species discussed include Antonina graminis, Dysmicoccus boninsis, D. brevipes, D. cocotis, Planococcus citri, P. dioscoreae, P. pacificus, Pseudococcus citriculus and Saccharicoccus sacchari. A systematic list of host plants and their associated pseudococcids is provided. Five new combinations are proposed including Dysmicoccus cocotis comb. nov. for Pseudococcus cocotis, and Paracoccus ilu comb. nov. for Chorizococcus ilu. The work is designed to provide agricultural staff with a reliable means of identification of species and to encourage non-specialists to identify the group.
