By-products of wood carbonization II. Wood tars from the trees of Brazil.
The components and quantities of wood tars were studied in 20 species of 8 families. Most species contained a large proportion of pitch (40-70%) based on wood tar wt. High- and low-boiling fractions each represented 10-30% by wt. Large differences between species were found in the proportions of strong acids, phenols and neutrals in the high-boiling fractions. Seventeen phenolic components were identified in the tars.
